She hand-builds vessels by coiling, the way the ancient world did, and they sit in the British Museum, the Met and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Dame Magdalene Anyango Namakhiya Odundo was born in Nairobi in 1950, educated in Kenya and India, and moved to England in 1971.
She took her degree at the West Surrey College of Art and Design in 1976 and a master's at the Royal College of Art, returned to teach at the University for the Creative Arts in 1997 and became Professor of Ceramics in 2000. Her hand-built coiled vessels are held in the permanent collections of nearly fifty museums, among them the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Museum of African Art. She was appointed Chancellor of the University for the Creative Arts in 2018 and made a Dame in 2020.
