In 2024 she became the first athlete of either sex to win three consecutive Olympic golds over 1500 metres, and she holds the world record at three distances.
Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon grew up in Bomet and ran to school barefoot. She won world junior cross country titles before moving to the track.
She won the Olympic 1500 metres in Rio in 2016, in Tokyo in 2021, and in Paris in 2024 — the first athlete, man or woman, to take that title three times in a row. She also won the world championship over the distance three times, and took the 5,000 metres world title as well.
In the space of seven weeks in the summer of 2023 she broke three world records: the 1500 metres in Florence, the 5,000 metres in Paris six days later, and the mile in Monaco in July. No middle-distance runner had done anything comparable in a single season.
She did all of it either side of having a child in 2018 and returning to win everything again, which is the part Kenyan runners talk about most.
