His show has run since 2007 and is the platform almost every working Kenyan comedian came through — he did not just host the industry, he built it.
Daniel Ndambuki took the stage name Churchill and came up through radio, where the character Mwalimu King'ang'i on Classic 105 made him a household voice across Kenya long before television.
The Churchill Show, which began in 2007, is the thing he will be remembered for. Kenya had comedians before it, but it had no industry: no circuit, no way for an unknown to get in front of an audience, no route from a joke to a living. The show built one. It ran weekly for well over a decade, toured the counties rather than staying in Nairobi, and made a deliberate practice of putting untested performers on national television.
Almost every working Kenyan stand-up of the past fifteen years came through it, and a substantial number have said so — the comedy scenes in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu are downstream of that stage. He has also been open about the mental health toll on performers after several comedians associated with the show died by suicide, and has used his position to talk about it in a country where that conversation had barely started.
