He put roughly KSh5,000 into a building society at Kangema in 1984. It became Equity Bank, and by customer numbers the largest bank holding company in Africa.
Peter Munga was born in Kangema in Kenya's central highlands in 1943, went to Gaichanjiru high school, and worked as an assistant secretary in the Ministry of Water.
In 1984 he founded Equity Building Society at Kangema with capital of about KSh5,000. It became Equity Bank Group on 31 August 2004 and listed on the Nairobi Stock Exchange two years later, growing into the largest bank holding company on the African continent by customer numbers. He holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Nairobi.
